Union SG have moved to the top of the standings and “can talk about Liverpool”

Liverpool

Manager Karel Geraerts of Union SG said, “Now we can think and talk about Liverpool”. His team won its sixth match of the year to go to Anfield as league leaders.

With Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as the opponent in what would be the second Europa League group game, Geraerts described the encounter between the two teams as “an absolute highlight game” for the Belgian team.

They achieved a 3-1 victory against struggling Charleroi on Sunday. Union SG believes they have made the greatest preparations for the encounter.

Gent drew and they got a third straight victory in the Belgian Pro League. Union SG currently hold the top spot in the standings owing to their early goals.

Union SG has scored 18 goals in nine league games this year. The majority (11) of which have come in the opening period, like they did against Charleroi.

Ross Sykes gave Union SG the lead, but the visitors fought back to level it 1-1. However, two goals, scored in the 45th and 45+4th minutes, were major blows. It put Geraerts’ team in position to win.

The first-half score of 3-1 remained the same as Christian Burgess scored in the final second of first-half regular time. Sykes added his second minutes later.

Alexis Mac Allister’s brother, Kevin, was one of the seven changes made by Geraerts to his starting lineup from the team that defeated RWDM 3-2 three days earlier. Kevin came off the bench on Sunday.

Union SG manager thinks they are ready to face Liverpool

Dennis Eckert, who has five goals so far this season, is Union’s top goal threat. But has missed the previous four games because of an injury. Union normally plays a 3-4-2-1 style.

The goalkeeper Anthony Moris left the game after 70 minutes due to a slight problem. But he should be available at Anfield.

The Belgian team has demonstrated, they can get games going quickly. Liverpool will need to be on guard to avoid giving up the first goal for the seventh time already this season.

After the victory, Union SG manager, Geraerts made a statement in the team’s huddle. He said

“Now, for sure, we can think and talk about Liverpool, an absolute highlight game. For sure, we have to show a good performance.”
