Wolves have confirmed the signing of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes. The midfielder has arrived from the Portuguese League for a club-record fee.

He was reportedly waiting for a club playing in the Champions League. However, Bruno Lage has convinced the midfielder to join the club.

According to reports, Wolves have beaten Chelsea to Nunes signing. There was also an interest of Liverpool at different stages. However, it was nothing beyond interest. Hence, Bruno Lage stepped in and made a breakthrough with Sporting and Nunes. The club confirmed his signing after Nunes completed his medical on Wednesday.

Official statements have also confirmed that they have finalized a club-record deal. However, the fee has not been disclosed by the Premier League club. Although, reports suggest that they are paying €45m (£38m) with a further €5m (£4.2m) coming in add-ons. The 23-year-old has signed a four-year contract with Wolves of 2027 with an option to extend by a further 12 months.

According to the midfielder, the manager Bruno Lage played a big role in convincing him to join the club. The midfielder said, “I think the club itself [convinced him], and also I spoke to some of my teammates because I play with them for the national team. The coach as well really wanted me, and I wanted to play in the Premier League. I think it’s the right next step for me and I’m very happy to be here.”

Nunes is expected to play in Bruno Lage’s squad on Saturday against Tottenham Hotspur. The new arrival has already played for Sporting in two matches. He contributed a goal and an assist in just 180 minutes of his action. He also helped the Portuguese giants win the Primeira Liga title in 2020-21. Wolves have surely got a big talented midfielder on their books for their future.

The Premier club have brought in three fresh faces. They have signed Nunes, Nathan Collins, and Goncalo Guedes. This is despite their financial problems. Bruno Lage is also expected to be allowed to bring in a recognized striker to compete with Raul Jimenez.
