Aston Villa are on a roll since Steven Gerrard has taken over the reigns at the club. Gerrard joined Villa when they were fighting relegation, and has now transformed them into a mid-table club. However, in the process Gerrard and Aston Villa may have just hit some kind of a jackpot with one particular player. Jacob Ramsey is the player in discussion here, who has consistently delivered for Aston Villa. The academy product is in some form this season, thriving under Steven Gerrard.

Jacob Ramsey has come through the youth ranks of Aston Villa. The 20-year-old who plies his trade in the midfield made his debut for the Villans’ senior side back in 2019. However, it has not been easy for Ramsey to crack into the first-team of Villa. The midfielder played a combined 65 games for the U18s and U23 sides of Villa. Ramsey had an impressive 24 goals and 11 assists to show for those 65 games.

As a result, then Villa manager Dean Smith handed Ramsey his senior team debut in the Championship against West Bromwich Albion. Since then, the youngster hasn’t looked back and cemented his place in Aston Villa’s first-team. Furthermore, under Gerrard as well, Ramsey has almost certainly become undroppable.

Very few 20-year-olds cement their place in the first-team of a Premier League club. Jacob Ramsey is one of them who is showing no signs of stopping. This season, Ramsey has played 29 league games for Villa, missing out on only two occasions. The midfielder has come up with 6 goals and a assist in those 29 outings. However, there’s more to his game than just the numbers.

Ramsey is the Aston Villa player with the highest efforts of putting the opponent under pressure, racking up a massive 461 attempts. Furthermore, he comes only second to club captain Tyrone Mings in number of yards covered with the ball while controlling it with their feet in any direction. This shows his confidence and fearlessness on the ball which is quite essential in a league like the English top flight. At just 20, Ramsey has so far played 51 Premier League games for Aston Villa. He is perfectly proving to be a player Gerrard wants in the middle of the park. The attacking mid clocks an average of 10.6 kilometres covered per 90, which is only second as well to Emiliano Buendia. Ramsey’s work-rate, ethic and ability to constantly learn surely appeases the Gerrard who has entrusted him with 25 league starts this term.

Certainly, Ramsey is the one for Aston Villa’s future, along with the present. There is no doubt that the Midlands club will ensure his development, and stay at the Villa Park.
