Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has confirmed that he is looking to sign a holding midfielder. However, the manager also says that they won’t pay over the odds to sign the player.

The Red Devils have been linked with a host of holding midfielders. However, some have rejected the approach while in other approaches they have been priced out of a move.

THE DILEMMA FOR MANCHESTER UNITED REGARDING THE FRENKIE DE JONG DEAL

The Red Devils have reportedly reached a full agreement with Barcelona for Frenkie De Jong. He was identified by the club as the leading transfer target this summer. However, an agreement on personal terms is getting more and more complicated. According to reports, the Dutch midfielder is not ready to move to Manchester United and wants to stay at Barcelona. He still has four years left on his contract.

The midfielder further said in a press conference, “I prefer to stay with Barcelona. Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice,” the midfielder told ESPN earlier this summer.”

ERIK TEN HAG IS ALSO SEARCHING FOR ALTERNATIVES

Erik Ten Hag is also not taking any chances. He wants to be ready with other options if the deal collapses for De Jong. However, many reports state that the manager is willing to wait till the last day of the window if a deal is possible. He also said that he would like to sign English players. However, he says it is not possible to sign any this summer due to their asking price.

On signing a new holding midfielder he said, ” “We are looking for a player who can play in the holding midfield position but it has to be the right one,” Ten Hag told reporters. This statement clearly looks to indicate that Manchester United are willing to wait for Frenkie De Jong. He also says that they will develop a player from the academy if they can’t sign anyone this window.

Manchester United have already signed three new players during the summer transfer window. They have brought in Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, and Lisandro Martinez. However, the club are still looking to sign a striker and a holding midfielder this window.
