His performance in the first half as an attacking midfielder was poor. The midfielder had done well to relaunch his career under interim manager Ralf Ragnick.
THE IMPACT OF FRED IN THE MIDFIELD DEPARTMENT
Fred has given Erik Ten Hag a new problem in Manchester United midfield. The midfielder has had a reinvention since the change of manager last season. Interim manager Ralf Ragnick helped him rebuild his United career. Many fans felt it was going to continue under Erik Ten Hag. The midfielder had done well in the games after coming on as a substitute late in the second half.
Hence, the midfielder was given a chance to start for Manchester United against Real Sociedad. Erik Ten Hag surprisingly played him as an attacking midfielder just behind Cristiano Ronaldo. However, he could not have any positive impact on the game. The midfielder lacked consistency when the ball was at his feet. Hence, the midfielder could again find himself playing league and cup matches from the bench.
THE OTHER MANCHESTER UNITED PLAYERS ALSO DID NOT PLAY WELL AGAINST REAL SOCIEDAD
It was clear after the match the other United players did not perform well against Real Sociedad. Another problem for the Red Devils was the penalty given by VAR. The ball hit Lisandro Martinez on arm only after deflecting. In the Premier League, it would not be a penalty. However, the Serie A referee have a different view and is awarded a penalty. United tried to create opportunities after the opposition goal.
However, they failed to create any clear chances. Cristiano Ronaldo, Antony, and Anthony Elenga all failed to create any opportunities in attack. In the midfield also, only Cristian Eriksen played well in the game. Casemiro and Fred failed to do anything to compliment the attack. The defence also tried to help but their trying was undone by the controversial penalty.
Hence, it was a bad idea by Erik Ten Hag to mix the line-up with fringe players. Manchester United will now need to win the games against Sheriff and Omonia Nicosia. It will be a failure if they do not finish top 2 in the group stages in the Europa League.
