Rio Ferdinand has shared his opinion on the comparison between Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold. He says Reece James is better at the moment.

However, he backs the Liverpool right-back to improve his game. These debates and opinions come ahead of FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year.

Rio Ferdinand has backed Trent Alexander-Arnold to improve his game. However, he has said Reece James is currently ahead of the Liverpool man to start in the World Cup. He said,

“In my eyes, Reece is ahead right now, but Trent will come out of this spell and that could change.” He further adds “On the ball, I believe he [James] is equally as good as Trent, but defensively he is a notch up in one-versus-one situations. That’s the difference between them at the moment.

The point made by Rio Ferdinand on the Liverpool man is correct. Trent Alexander-Arnold is brilliant in the attacking. However, he looks exposed in the defending department. The right-back was exposed by Gabriel Martinelli in the Arsenal game. Gabriel Martinelli scored in 1st minute of the game from the right side. The right-back was also substituted due to an injury.

Trent Alexander-Arnold needs to improve his defensive game quickly. It is because FIFA World Cup is there in Qatar this year. Hence, he needs to show his qualities to Gareth Southgate. The England manager has already said that he prefers Kieran Trippier over the Liverpool defender. Many fans were furious with his teammates. Former player Gabby Agbonlahor even said the Liverpool defender to retire from the national team.

However, despite the controversial statement, many expect Southgate to select him for the World Cup. Although, Trent has performed well for Liverpool to confirm his place. The defender has started in every Premier League match and the Champions League match. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp still considers him one of the best players at the club.

Trent Alexander Arnold needs to seriously up his defensive game for Liverpool. He needs to show to Gareth Southgate that he deserves a place in the squad for the World Cup. It is because if he misses this year, he will have to wait 5 years for the next World Cup.
